On Saturday 6 February the York Dancesport team headed to Sheffield for a day of competitive ballroom and Latin American dancing. The Sheffield friendly competition is held in the Octagon centre at Sheffield University and is an excellent warm-up event for the serious competitions later on this term. York saw great success at this competition, which will hopefully be repeated later on in the term.
Ballroom started off the day and saw some fantastic results from the team. Andrew Grantham and Katie Peeling saw their hard work pay off as they made it through a round of intermediate ballroom, and three rounds of open Foxtrot. This year Sheffield changed the format of the novice rounds, creating a novice qualifier for one of two novice sections. Lauren Harrison and Dave Barker did extremely well to qualify for Novice 1 with their Waltz. Meanwhile in Novice 2, Lydia Teale and Vikki Gale came 1st place for Waltz, and 2nd place for Quickstep – beginning their collection of trophies and medals for the day!
In the afternoon we moved on to the Latin American dancing competition and York had even more success. Congratulations to Connor Fitzgerald and Brigit Smith for getting through a round of both Cha Cha and Jive. Lydia and Katie continued to succeed and came 1st in the Novice 2 Cha Cha, and 6th in the same-sex Jive. Each of our novice couples did well to qualify for the Novice 1 Jive competition.
Rock and roll is another of York’s favourite dances and in recent years we have consistently done well in it. Sheffield was no disappointment, with Vikki Gale and Richard Bennett (an ex-York student) coming 2nd, Lauren and Dave coming 3rd, and Lydia and Nicola Haydon coming 5th. After all that dancing it still wasn’t the end of the day with Team Knockout and Team Match still to come.
Team Knockout is a bit like a dance-off, with two teams being drawn out of a hat, who then have to select three different couples to perform three different dances which are also drawn out of a hat. Whilst the York team performed admirably and coped well with the pressure, we were unfortunately knocked out by Imperial College. However, the team saw much greater success in the Team Match part of the competition, with York A coming 6th in the second division.
The team all performed well throughout the day and there was a great sense of team spirit. Well done everyone – your hard work showed!
