On Saturday 9th March, the University of York’s Swing Dance Society will host their third annual dance competition in aid of Comic Relief. The evening of sports and entertainment at the Roger Kirk Centre will bring elite sports members and the university’s “professional” dancers – established members of dance societies – together to dance in front of a live audience in order to win the title of York Dances for Comic Relief!
The beginning of Spring Term saw the preparations for the competition begin as couples were partnered from some of the university’s sports societies, from water polo to fencing, as well as other dance societies like Ballroom and Latin society. Since the start of term, the couples have dedicated time to learning and perfecting their steps.
Last year’s event raised over £3,000 for Sport Relief, which member’s of the Swing Dance Society hope will be matched or succeeded this year for Comic Relief, an organisation supporting “vulnerable people and communities in the UK and internationally” in a “vision to create a just world free from poverty” (comicrelief.com).
I spoke with the Co-President of the York Dances for Sport Relief Committee, Hanan Golabi, regarding her involvement with the event over the past two years:
“Last year I had the pleasure of being involved on the committee so decided this year that I wanted another piece of the action. Every year the event has the power to bring all kinds of students together. I have seen real friendships blossom out of the couples that had never even met before we put them together, yet alone danced together! I love that the power of dance can bring people together and the joy people get from dancing really comes across on the night.”
The event is welcome to everyone, especially those who have “ever sat at home and found yourself smiling at Strictly Come Dancing.”
The Lounge offers unique, “special-themed” drinks to celebrate the event so you can “support your friends with your favourite cocktail in-hand”, as well as a raffle with your chance to win “some great prizes that you can enjoy in York”.
Tickets are £4 each and all of the proceeds go to Comic Relief. Tickets will be sold both on-line and on the door at the event so whether you have friends competing, are interested in dance or fancy a different kind of Saturday night come down to the Roger Kirk Centre from 19:30 – 22:00 and support a great cause.
See their Facebook page for more information on the event and a seek-peek at the couples in training.
