Pizza Express

A taste of Italy in the heart of York

Pizza, in my opinion, can only be tarted up so much. A good Italian pizza however rarely needs much doing to it. That’s why I rarely go to Pizza Hut and only drunkenly go to Efes, after tasting real, Italian pizza, anything else just not as good.

I’d never quite made my way to Pizza Express, for some reason I just put it off, and now I’m not sure why. It provided a nice, fresh pizza in a friendly environment and was reasonably priced.

We started by sharing some dough balls with garlic butter – they’d been recommended by my housemate – and were a lovely start to lunch – presentation may have been lacking a little but the taste was definitely there.

I then had the Gardineria pizza and my companion went for the Four Seasons. Mine was a lovely vegetarian option, with asparagus, artichokes, mushroom and peppers with olives and a rich, but not too heavy tomato and pesto sauce. It really was delicious, the artichoke and asparagus were soft as well as roasted peppers, and the combination of pesto and tomato sauce, is a match made in heaven.

The Four Seasons was a combination of mushrooms, pepperoni, olives, anchovies, and capers. It received good reviews, with her only complaint was that it wasn’t ‘overly warm.’

We washed them down with a glass of Sicilian Lemonade - which, whilst it was a little sweet for me, was nice – I am however one of those people who likes lemony food to be tangy!

Our meal was enjoyable. The décor didn’t try to hard, it’s set in a large building and rather than cramming it with original furniture, simple tables and chairs were put in place – it is after all a pizza restaurant. The food may not quite be Italian pizza, but it was good.

The only complaint, is the lack of express in ‘Pizza Express.’ Sharing a plate of dough balls, two pizzas and a glass of lemonade took an hour and a quarter, and to say it was eating out of valuable shopping time it was just too long!
