You will never want to eat anywhere else again

There is one thing and one thing only inherently wrong with this restaurant: that it doesn’t come with a warning. You should be aware that once you have eaten here you will never want to dine anywhere else ever again. The whole place just oozes complete brilliance. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff break down your defences and leave you completely unprepared for the assault on your senses that J Bakers provides. I have had the luxury of dining at a few expensive and very posh restaurants but nothing compares to the creations I have eaten here. And creations they are, the combination of flavours and ingredients are nothing but genius.
With a seasonal menu that uses local produce you are guaranteed to be consuming the freshest and most timely products available. The constantly changing menu also gives you a good excuse to return time and time again. The menu consists of familiar and favourite foods with a bold, new and interesting twist. The ‘grazing menu’ available at lunch time is the perfect opportunity to sample the delicious offerings at a lower price. This is definitely a restaurant to save for special occasions, not only would you be spoilt if you ate here all the time, but it is at the pricier end of the market. Despite being more expensive than the usual student eatery, it is extremely good value for money.
It is the small touches at this restaurant which make it so enjoyable. While I opted for two courses of starter and main, my partner decided to have main and desert. So I would not be eating alone the staff brought out a sample of the deliciously light and frothy cauliflower soup. This was almost as good as the egg and asparagus soldiers, a perfect example of the enjoyment Jeff Baker wants you to have with his food. On a separate occasion I visited the restaurant I had a main of Duck with Christmas pudding which is possibly the nicest thing I’ve ever eaten. The Duck was cooked to perfection and melted on the tongue, and the combination with Christmas pudding wrapped in pastry was superb.
On both occasions I have visited this restaurant, I found two courses to be more than sufficient with each portion being extremely generous. With all the courses being so tempting though, you may find it slightly overwhelming. If you do make it to pudding the lemon meringue pie is refreshing and zingy, presented with perfection and a taste to match. The Chocolate fondue should also not be missed, with a fruit kebab and handmade marshmallows that taste like clouds, it is a perfect desert to share. This could also be experienced in the restaurants Chocolate Room, which offers the opportunity of pure indulgence in the most delectable chocolate treats including a range of drinks and homemade truffles.
The restaurants critically acclaimed Michelin star Chef, Jeff Baker, who opened the restaurant in 2006 has brought to York one of the best restaurants in the North of England. It has been showered with praise and awards on a local and national level. For a restaurant of such a high standard the relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices are quite unexpected. The inclusion of a children’s menu also means this is a place for the whole family to enjoy and will undoubtedly become a Yorkshire favourite.
