Best Indian in Yorkshire

Probably the best Indian restaurant in the North of England” screams the Akbar’s website, and with a bigger and more upmarket dining room than your traditional Indian, they might just be right. Ideal for large parties rather than intimate dinners for two, the interior is cool and classy rather than the conventional kitsch, and nicely open plan. It’s in the food, though, that Akbar’s excels – meals are well thought-out and steer well clear of the conventional chicken tikka masala/lamb madras/vegetable balti rut of the average Anglo-Indian curry house. Those old-school favourites are all here, and they taste good, but you might as well go for something a bit more adventurous: calamari special anyone? I went for a nice vegetarian rogan josh - because I always do - and the difference was that you can actually taste the tomatoes that make up the sauce. There’s no grease here, and not too much ghee, so the flavours are allowed to come out. The ridiculous size of the naan, which comes hanging on a peg like a mini naan-bread abbatoir, means that you probably won’t need any dessert. I didn’t. But I’m sure it’s very good – everything else about this place is.
