Betty's Cafe Tea Rooms ****-
Betty's Betty's is as much of a part of the city as is York Minster. Situated on St. Helen's square, the café has a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu as well as its own bakery (with an extensive range of bread, cakes and chocolates) and gift shop. Children are welcomed and have their own 'Little Rascals' menu; there is organic baby food, high chairs and toys for babys and toddlers. A pianist plays every evening between 6pm and 9pm.

Ask restaurant The York branch of this chain of Italian restaurants is one of the largest and most beautiful dining destinations in the city. The Grand Assembly Rooms, with its 48 imposing Corinthian columns, used to be a mecca for the card-playing, tea-drinking and ballroom-dancing aristocracy. Now it serves as a popular place to enjoy pizza and pasta dishes at fairly reasonable prices.

Evil Eye Lounge ***-
Evil Eye Evil Eye Lounge is a cocktail bar with attitude, with a trendy decor and an individuality that sets it apart from York's other run of bars. Its situation on Stonegate places it a little further away from the centre of York's nightlife, and hidden away behind the shop front of its adjoining real ale store, it is easy to miss as you walk past. There is an extensive cocktail list, and a wide selection of martinis, champagnes and absinthes, but the atmosphere and the people are generally more bohemian than particularly upmarket.

Akbars Akbar's is an authentic Indian restaurant on George Hudson Street. It has a comprehensive menu of mild to spicy dishes and specialises in sizzling, pan-cooked baltis from the region of Baltistan. With an excellent reputation - recommended by the Good Food Guide and awarded 'Restaurant of the Year' by the Yorkshire Evening Post - you're advised to book your table in advance. There are non-smoking areas, facilities for the disabled and a fully licensed bar.

There are three function rooms upstairs available to hire for parties or socials, and a takeaway window outside offers street food on the move during the day.

Living Room The Living Room in York is situated on the first floor within the riverside ‘Merchant Exchange’ near The Parish. It boasts attractive views across the Ouse and has an interior to match. With live music from Thursday through Sunday, ranging from rock to blues & boogie The Living Room certainly lives up to its claim that it has become a favourite neighbourhood hangout in the city centre (though perhaps not for students).

Melton's A Highly recommended restaurant specialising in using local produce with a commitment to home-cooking techniques. An established restaurant in York where advanced booking is advised, especially for its ever-popular 'First Saturday Lunches'- four themed courses for £26 a head. Melton's offers an extensive wine list and also has an 'early bird' dinner menu from 5:30 until 6:15. It's sister restaurant Melton's too can be found on Walmgate.

Dusk ***-
Dusk A York student classic, Dusk is fairly small and with a dark, smoky atmosphere. It's always busy, particularly at student peak times during the week when cocktails are offered at 2 for the price of 1 (as long as you get the same). In the summer, or the winter if you can brave the cold, there is an outside patio area at the front to accommodate the overflow of people. The upstairs area inside can be hired out for free, making it a popular choice for socials and 21st birthdays. It's also open until 2am every night of the week.

The Blue Bicycle ***
Blue bicycle Once a brothel, the blue bicycle now boasts an impressive selection of nostalgic memorabilia downstairs. Upstairs you can enjoy the long list of fine wines overlooking the River Foss. The Blue Bicycle is well-known in the town for its high-end prices. It offers traditional cuisine such as fillet of Yorkshire beef and char-grilled chicken breast, and prides itself on its fish dishes and home made desserts. It also has a very comprehensive wine list and offers private vaulted booths for romantic dinners and has an outside catering division called Out of The Blue.

Bobo Lobo's Bobo Lobo goes the whole hog in providing the authentic Latin American feel with a range of Brazilian cocktails and tequila on offer. Expect salsa or latino music playing the background as you eat. The large upstairs restaurant still has the upper class York restaurant feel though, but downstairs is a more lively, but small bar area. Portions tend to be on the large side. Restaurant welcomes big groups.

1331 Restaurant The fashionable 1331 is situated on a typically cobbled street near York Minster. It has a secluded courtyard outside for alfresco dining, a lounge bar, a heated terrace and, up 31 steps, a cosy top floor restaurant. At night-time the supremely well-stocked cocktail bar can get quite lively. Otherwise, it's a popular place to get a coffee and cake, a light lunch, or have an intimate dinner date. There's also a quiz every Tuesday (starting at 8.30 p.m.), regular live music events and sports games often screened in the lounge bar.

19 Grape lane restaurant Nineteen is a sophisticated, upmarket restaurant taking up two floors of one of the oldest buildings in the city (it dates back to 1437). There are only a handful of tables on each level, and it's popularity makes it a necessity to book in advance. There are fewer than 10 main courses on the dinner menu and only one vegetarian option.

B Henrys B. Henry's is the Alcuin College bar, located on the ground floor of D Block. It is named after Brian Henry, a popular College porter between 1972 and 2000. VR Vodka Revolution is situated next to City Screen cinema, near to the similarly stylish Pitcher & Piano and Orgasmic. Working with the original features of the historical building, which once housed the Yorkshire Herald Newspaper, it has an urban feel and is one of the more recent additions to York's bar scene.

Edge ***
Wentworth College Edge is the typical campus dining room and essentially the same as all the others, except that its position in Wentworth, the graduate college, and refurbishment last year have provided it with a reputation as the classiest eatery on campus. It now boasts comfortable sofas and fairly stylish decor, and a selection of hot main meals, soup and sandwiches throughout the day. The head chef was named UK University Chef of the Year in a national contest in the academic year 2005-06.

Wilde's Wine Bar and Bistro **-
Wilde's Sharing its name with the famous playwright, this modern restaurant, has a distinctly cosmopolitan atmosphere and is tucked away behind some of York's smaller street which means newcomers to the city may find it a little tricky to discover. A touch on the small side, but its intimate surroundings help set the mood and there are many tables which ensure you wont have any trouble. Wilde's has a varied menu, which covers all tastes, from Mexican to Italian to traditional English dishes.

Fiesta Mehicana **-
Fiesta Mehicana This is a bright, loud and lively restaurant with an individual atmosphere. The food is traditionally Mexican - chilli, nachos, chimichangas - and unlike much else you'll find in York. Prices start at around £6 for a vegetarian main course but the majority of the meat dishes cost more in the region of £11 or £12. Located near the Gallery and with it's large tables make it a popular choice for parties, while the bar is stocked with Mexican beers and tequilas to see you on your way.

Willow Cantonese Restaurant **-
Willow's The Willow is the Chinese buffet restaurant of choice for most of York's society socials. Family-run, it has a good location on Coney Street (upstairs from Woolworths) and one standard price buys you as many trips to the savoury and sweet counters as you can manage. The restaurant is fairly large, licensed and can be hired out for up to 160 people. The restaurant is open for food all day, but after 11pm at the weekend the tables are pushed back to make room for a disco. Takeaways available.

Charles XII **-
Charles Still one of the most popular pubs for students due to its proximity to campus. Has a large garden and patio area round the back, interspersed with outdoor heaters. Offers barbeques in the summer. Drinks and menu are very cheap and usually generous portions for the price. Music videos are normally constantly playing on the televised jukeboxes. Can get quite busy on some weekday nights as is recognised as pre-clubbing venue, especially difficult to find tables to sit at. Good atmosphere and two TVs with Sky Television.

The Plough Inn **-
Plough A family pub situated 2 miles down Fulford road, if coming from town. The Plough serves traditional beers and wines as well as English pub grub every lunch and evening. There is a weekly quiz night on a Monday at 9:30pm and the pub also has a Sky Sports license, regularly showing big football games. There is a spacious beer garden with a children's play area, good parking and wheelchair access. The Plough also has a patio area that can seat 50 people outside. There is a separate area for non-smokers. Booking for evenings is advised.

Quite simply... Situated on Heslington Road on the route from campus into town [and, crucially, back home again], Efes has a wide range of typical student late-night food: pizzas, burgers and kebabs. Open until 3am, the shop is small but family-run. Smile nicely as you buy your meal after your night out and the staff might give you a lollipop - or even drive you home.

Kennedy's Cafe Bar A chic, clean bar down Stonegate that offers wines, beers and coffees in a laid-back environment. Tends to be higher-end prices but still manages to attract the shoppers during the day at the weekend. Night time sees more metrosexual drinkers. Wheelchair access is available and they serve cafe type food during the day. Accept party bookings for both the upstairs bar and VIP suite.

Fellini's A traditional Italian bistro with a bright interior and a wide selection of pasta, pizza and meat dishes, Fellini's is family-run and all dishes are cooked to order. Its position on Fossgate puts it closer to campus than other comparable Italian restaurants, but it has limited parking. There are daily seafood specials but the prices mean that perhaps the average student would be limited to pasta and pizza dishes.

The emphasis is on the quality of the freshly-prepared food, but the high prices put this out of the league of the average student.

Slug & lettuce A classy chain bar for the younger trendy crowd (a favourite for post-work suits having that end of week drink). The Slug and Lettuce offers your usual pints and mixers but also does a good range of classic cocktails too. It provides your normal upmarket bar food such as steak sandwiches and sausages and mash, but it is nice to find slight Mediterranean touches to your bog standard dishes. Slug and Lettuce also offers a breakfast menu with a good selection of choice including pastries, cooked breakfast, and hot and cold beverages.
