Comment Policy

The Yorker aims to be a platform for interesting and informative discussion. We welcome all comments from our online community on the content we produce. However, in the interests of keeping it interesting and informative, there are the following community guidelines.

1. Any comment judged to be defamatory is not acceptable.

2. Any comment that is racist, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise hate speech, is not acceptable.

3. Any comment that is threatening, offensive, or constitutes a personal attack, is not acceptable.

4. Any comment that hijacks the discussion for the purposes of commercial advertising or spam, is not acceptable.

5. Any comment that is significantly off-topic or excessively long, is not acceptable.

We believe that an interesting and civil discussion can take place within these guidelines.

We reserve the right to edit or remove any comment for any of the reasons given above, or for any other reason.

Our comments are moderated, particularly for those with unverified email addresses. As such, your comments may occasionally take a while to appear on the site.

Accounts

Do I need an account? Yes, if you want to write articles. You don't need an account if you just want to read the articles, they're universally accessible.

How do I sign up for an account? Click the link at the foot of every page to register; all you need is an email address. It's totally free to use The Yorker.


Writing

Who can write? Any student can write for The Yorker, and we warmly encourage you to give it a go. Membership for an academic year is £6, which importantly acts as writers insurance so all writers do need to pay.

How do I write? Submit your articles via the website once you have registered and paid membership. If you need to pay membership, email editor@theyorker.co.uk.

What can I write? The Yorker boasts a hugely diverse range of content: from videocasts to satire, news to opinion, there's something for everyone. Get in touch with any section editor by email and they will give you all the information you need. See the Contact page.

I don't want to write, but can I still get involved with The Yorker? Absolutely. We are always looking for people interested in finance, marketing and tech; they are an essential component of The Yorker. See the Contact page for who to get in touch with.


The Business

What makes The Yorker different?

That we are an independent business means several exciting things. We are fully independent from YUSU and so are not bound by student union censorship. This is most important because it means we can be first on the scene with news, and we can cover things no other campus media outlet is able to. Being a limited company rather than merely a university society means that you will get an opportunity to operate in a genuine business structure: this is a great opportunity to gain experience that will differentiate you from other graduates.

What charity does The Yorker support?

All annual profit for 2011-12 goes to The Samaritans.
