The University of York Students’ Union (YUSU) will take control of popular commercial venues on campus, currently owned by the University of York, from September 2018.
In a press release distributed to campus media on Monday 16th, YUSU announced that it would assume control of bars operating in Derwent College, Central Hall, Greg’s Place, the Jack Lyons Theatre bar and Vanbrugh College. The arrangement for YUSU to take over University-owned bars was proposed by the University, The Yorker understands.
At present, The Courtyard, The Lounge, The Kitchen and The Glasshouse are all commercial venues on campus operated by YUSU.
The Yorker understands that there are no immediate plans for any campus outlet to be renamed. Major changes will be implemented only after consultation with the student body.
Bars based in college areas play host to several weekly college activities and are popular meeting points for YUSU societies and sports clubs. YUSU wishes to reach out to colleges, societies and sports groups and ask for their input on where campus services can improve or change.
The Yorker understands that there are no current plans for YUSU to change or limit college events in bars.
James Durcan, the YUSU President, told the media:
We are excited to work with our diverse student body to turn these important venues into even more dynamic spaces that can further enhance students’ lives. This move will create more jobs for students with YUSU and we will gradually invest into those premises to make them market-leading venues – further enhancing the space and facilities available to colleges, societies and sports teams.
Responding to students’ queries on Facebook, the Sabbatical Officers told students that there would be a consultation “range of consultations once everyone is back. Once YUSU gets more purchasing power with these new bars, it’ll be easier to keep prices lower.”
Writing on his Sabbatical Officer Facebook account, Finn Judge told students that it was “100%” YUSU’s intention to bring Yoyo Wallet to the campus outlets that the Students’ Union would take over, adding that “initiatives such as Green Impact, Best Bar None and Good Night Out campaigns” would be rolled out “across all venues as quickly as possible.”
Some students have voiced concerns about YUSU’s capacity to run more services on campus, drawing attention to the closure of the YUSU Shop on Market Square. But a source within YUSU drew attention to The Kitchen, a venue at Alcuin College that made financial losses while owned by the University, but now makes a profit as a YUSU outlet.
