Emily Goulding and Radia Mustafa are looking to become the new Women’s Officers at the University of York Students’ Union.
What inspired you to run for the position?
We were inspired by the consent talks at the start of the year, and also wanted the chance to effect change within the university environment. With all the current political events, we want to ensure that all students on campus have the chance to be treated equally.
What makes you different from the other candidates?
As First Year students, we would like to ensure our policies are implemented in the next two years as well, whether we have the chance to run for Women’s Officers for another term or not. We’re also a more approachable face for First Year students and prospective students, and those who might not want to contact older years. In addition, we may be more able to tackle issues to do with diversity, as we can identify with the Asian population.
How would your policies change student life at York?
One of our main policies of issuing free sanitary products would save students money throughout the year (something we all need!), and our promotion of consent and mental health workshops would create a safer environment around campus for all students.
What challenges do you expect to face in this position and how will you respond to them?
As only part-time officers we can never be sure that our policies take affect or have any lasting impact, however, we will try to combat this by teaming up with other part-time officers such as the LGBTQ Officer and Disabled Students’ Officer, in working together to build a better university experience.
What has been your most enjoyable experience at university?
Going to Fibbers for our weekly dose of cheesy tunes and cheesy chips.
What challenges do women and non-binary students face on campus?
Especially for non-binary and WOC students, it can be difficult for your voice to be heard amongst the exclusivity of ‘white feminism’, we aim to create an inclusive space for all women and non-binary folk.
