The Yorker's sports section has secured a partnership with local rugby side York City Knights in what is the first deal of its kind for the student media outlet.

The Yorker is always keen to establish relationships with other companies and business in order to improve the chances and experience for its writers and this partnership demonstrates this ambition perfectly.

Sports Editor James Tompkinson worked hard in order to secure the partnership with the York Rugby League team, who compete in the Rugby League Co-operative Championship.

The deal sees the sports section clinch press access to the Knights’ games for The Yorker’s sports journalists, as well as the chance to interview the manager and players after matches.

This exciting and exclusive access has provided wonderful opportunities for The Yorker’s budding journalists as they look to expand their experience, and has proved a popular weekly feature on the website.

Tompkinson revealed his delight with the new partnership: “Covering professional rugby matches gives us a fantastic opportunity that no other campus media can offer and will allow our writers to have match day experiences that are almost identical to the ones that professional journalists have every week,” he said.

The new partnership has led to The Yorker's sports writer Nick Wright becoming The Yorker’s Chief Rugby Correspondent, and he will now be in charge of coverage of the games, as well as providing pre-match analysis and team news.

The Yorker welcomes all budding sports journalists to take advantage of this new mutually beneficial scheme; if you would like to review a match or get involved with The Yorker sports section, contact the Sports Editor James Tompkinson at
