The Yorker launched its new website on January 20, 2012 after months of hard work from its student web team.

Webmaster Ross Whiting and deputy webmaster David Morris both joined The Yorker in October 2011 and began work immediately on setting up a new website for the online student media outlet.

They decided to build a new website from scratch to take advantage of recent advances in technology, as well as to create a more interactive experience for our users.

David, a first year computer science student, wrote the code for the new website while Ross, who balances his politics degree with his role as The Yorker’s Politics Section Deputy Editor, worked on the design and graphics aspect.

The new website comes after a year of effort from all sides of the business, which ultimately culminated in its launch on Friday, January 20.

The Yorker’s Editor Aimee Howarth revealed how pleased she was to get David and Ross involved with the company: “Finding two people to create a new website for us was unbelievable,” she said.

“It was frustrating that server-side issues had prevented people getting involved in The Yorker over the last year but Ross and David helped us change this and I am so pleased we managed to get them on board.

“We can’t thank them enough for the fantastic new site they have set up for The Yorker. It looks wonderful and now we have a website that works fantastically!”

The company’s Chief Operational Director Stef Neylon added: “The new website means so much for The Yorker as we can develop our interactive content and really push our engagement with readers.

“We now also have the facility to build business relations with companies in York and across the country with expanded advertising and promotional opportunities.”

To thank the web team for their hard work a launch party was held at The Lounge on the University of York’s campus on the day that the new website went live.

David and Ross told The Yorker: “Creating a new site has been a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work over the last few months.

“We are pleased with the final result but there are still so many exciting things we want to add and so we will continue to develop the website as much as we can.”

The Yorker is the largest student-run company in York with over 100 members and received over 340,000 hits to its website last year.
