Presidents under fire

presidential candidates
The presidential candidates
Monday, 3rd March 2008
We've seen their posters, read their leaflets and joined their Facebook groups. But do the policies of this year's candidates for the SU presidency really stand up to scrutiny?

Unfortunately, due to technical problems beyond our control we have had to remove these videocasts until the problem can be resolved.

As each candidate was filmed for a lengthy period of time, the current problem only showed different lengths for each candidate.

As this is such a crucial week for the candidates, and our coverage, a decision was made, as the problem couldn't be resolved as quickly as possible, to removing the videocasts until each can be viewed in full.

We apologise to our readers, and the candidates for this problem, and I can guarantee this genuinely is a technical problem, and was not our attempt to show bias to any candidate.

If you wish to read each candidates policies, these can viewed on the YUSU voting page which shows each nomination form. We have also provided comprehensive interviews with each candidate in our 'Know your Sabb' campaign, and blogs written by campaigners on each team.

In response to various comments I would like to take this opportunity to point out that, under an agreement made with YUSU, candidates were to be listed in alphabetical order; thus Kunwar, Payne and Scott ('Tom' if via his official election form.)

We are working to rectify the problem and get the videocasts up as soon as possible!

If you have any concerns please email: editor@theyorker.co.uk

To 6:

Do returning officers have that kind of power? Because if so the constitution needs to be looked at - the idea that candidates could be stopped from talking to the press is ludicrous.

That would just be yet another example of YUSU censorship. I say vote Nadz for a free and fair media!

Whoops, guess that's what I get for going by the file creation times!

Chris,

No it shouldn't be above crticism, this is not what I suggested at all. I said criticism should be 'necessary or constructive'; not exempt from criticism as a whole. Of course, Nouse and Vision will have been slated too and they too are trying their best and the same goes for them. Constructive criticism is, of course, necessary but to suggest a bias to the extent as has been suggested in many articles is just plain ridiculous and is not helping anyone. If a complaint is to be made then surely it should be made to the editors not in petty, scathing comments.

The editors read the comments posted, so surely the article commenting system is an appropriate place to raise comments?

'you have consistently proven yourselves to be untrustworthy and presented slanted opinions, and 'accidently' had technical difficulties that favour Nads, your financial director' comment 6.

That comment is a complete joke. Untrustworthy? I would like to know who actually posted this comment.

'I very much hope that next year's candidates are forbidden by the returning officers from working with The Yorker'

And what would that achieve? Whatever you think of the apparent 'bias' of the site, the website has provided a service to campus during this period. This is shown in that our viewing is currently higher than it ever has been.

The irony is that this person is advocating people to not supply the yorker with news, despite the person who posted the comment obviously reading it!

I agree with Chris N in comment 17 that criticism shouldn't just stop because 'we are doing our best' and that we are unpaid.

However I do feel the degree of criticism is unecessary. The Yorker provides a service to campus. The fiery comments that are left here are testament to the interest the service obviously creates amongst students. I do not think this is appreciated enough.

Furthermore the difficulty of covering the election campaign in a fair way cannot be underestimated. What seems unbias to one person seems really unfair to another (as shown in some of the above comments).

I hope Chris N, and others will agree that comment 6's calls to silence the Yorker are really not what the students want. Chris and Mitch would have to do some degree work...lol

Hehe, well said Olly. Someone really should just disable my account until I get my dissertation done!

Well, as I'm on placement it'd actually be the work that I'm getting paid to do instead of degree work

Anyway, I agree and I don't think that candidates should be banned from talking to unaffiliated media, that would just be silly! I realise that this is the first event of this nature that The Yorker has covered, so hopefully they'll take the accusations of bias/criticisms of certain reporting aspects on board for the 2009 Elections to help reduce the criticism and double check that the News articles are completely neutral, and that opinions from all sides are represented in the blogs posted
