UGM round up

YUSU
Three motions were submitted at last night's UGM.
Friday, 5th February 2010
Written by Darius McQuaid.

Last night saw the YUSU Union General Meeting (UGM) where a range of important issues were raised through motions, the most significant being the level of first degree graduates from York who have managed to obtain a ‘graduate level’ job.

Rhianna Kinchin put forward the motion to provide more effective and relevant Careers Service advice and to raise students and the University’s awareness of the importance of employability. She drew attention to the face that in 2007/8, York received 76% for the amount of first degree graduates to obtain a ‘graduate level’ job.

This is noticeably lower when compared to other well known and prominent universities; for example York is 20% behind Imperial, 10% behind Bath and 4% behind Bristol, Edinburgh and Nottingham.

Kinchin said a large amount of students had commented that they believe most of the employability skills they have gained whilst at University have come from YUSU activities, so it is really important to push the university to improve the Careers Service in order for York to maintain its strong position in the league table.

Academic Officer Charlie Leyland seconded the motion, focusing on students with a large amount of contact hours such as bio-chemistry students and suggesting making sure that they also have the time to gain employability skills.

Anna Bucks took the opportunity to highlight how more space is needed for the York University Media committee (YUM). The motion stated that YUM societies need more office space in order for York to strengthen its student media and how it can lead to running bigger and better articles and other forms of media.

Kinchin proposed another important motion last night, asking to improve the current nomination and election processes, believing them to be over-complicated and stuck in the 1970s. Lewis Bretts, YUSU’s Democracy and Services Officer, is currently working on making an online administration system in the hope that more students will participate in the student democracy.

Campaigns Officer Jason Rose made his stand against unethical eggs being used on campus. Rose wishes to remove battery farm eggs from being sold on campus or any products using battery farm eggs.

He argued that both Sainsbury's and Waitrose have stopped selling them and that the cruelty exposed to these hens is unacceptable. Rose wants to see free range eggs being used on campus and argues that the slight increase in price for free range is worth it compared to the increase in quality received.

Voting on the UGM motions opens next week. For more information, visit the YUSU website.

Why isn't Rhianna re-running?!

Presumably because she thinks she did such a good job this time she couldn't possibly match it in future.
