A perceived rise in theft on campus triggers students' fears.
Elections are over and the results are in! The Yorker talks to YUM Chair-elect Chris Young, to find out what he's all about.
Miles Layram’s censure motions against Tim Ngwena and Ben Humphrys have failed at the most recent UGM, but two motions on portering have passed.
Nick Scarlett, one of the four candidates for Student Activities Officer, has released a statement responding to criticism from incumbent Rhianna Kinchin.
YUSU President Tom Scott, who released the ducks, told The Yorker: "It's a nice way to end the year - and it means another piece of UGM policy fulfilled!" He expressed thanks to the York Annual Fund, who helped make the purchase of the ducks possible.
On his final YUSU blog, published today, Scott added: "For the first years who don't remember Trevor, this will have very little impact; but I've had a couple of comments from final year students saying that, surprisingly, it's made them a little bit emotional."
Scott collected the ducks from Ferrybridge yesterday, from their breeder John Hall. They were released into the lake late yesterday afternoon. Though Scott had originally planned a large 'In-Duck-Tion' for the shelducks, for the sake of their welfare yesterday’s ceremony was a small one.
During the journey to Ferrybridge and back, Scott engaged in some live blogging through the YUSU Twitter page.
One of the ducks is to be named Trevor, in memory of the original male shelduck who died in the summer of 2007 at age 16. The other duck has yet to be named.
The original Trevor the Golden Duck was very popular among students, as Scott's previous comment suggests. A Facebook appreciation group was set up in his honour, which has 164 members. After his death, 621 people joined a new Trevor memorial group. Glyn Hallam, the creator of the latter group, has already informed members of the new ducks.
The motion that mandated YUSU to purchase a new golden duck was submitted by Matt Burton in February 2008, titled ‘YUSU Should Purchase A New Trevor The Golden Duck’. It was passed with 566 for, 75 against and 37 abstaining.
