The Yorker can confirm that Tokyo Industries have purchased Tru nightclub, ending months of speculation about the club’s future
The Sports Centre tent will remain open until at least 2016 after City of York Council gave the sports hall an additional six years planning permission at a meeting today.
The parents of student James Alexander Ednie Matthews, who passed away last Wednesday, have said they feel comforted by the tributes his friends have left on his Facebook page.
Club Salvation will be reopening on 12th August following a fire at the club two weeks ago.
Pro-Vice Chancellor for Students Jane Grenville told The Yorker that she was delighted at being able to make this announcement, and added that on two of the nights B Henry’s is open, it will remain open late, as it has over the course of this year and last. These nights are to be decided in discussions with the Alcuin JCRC.
Grenville said: "This is welcome news for Alcuin College, who have risen magnificently to the challenge set at the beginning of this term to turn over an average of £500 on each night that the bar is opened." She added that light snacks, such as paninis, will be available in addition to the cocktails "for which the bar is justly famous".
Former Alcuin Chair Erik O’Connor, who played a key role in the ‘Save B Henry’s’ campaign, said: "I think it's great that the University has come to its senses about investing in B. Henry's. The point of the 'Plan B' campaign was to convince the University that it is a venture worth investing in, and to express our dissatisfaction with the way the business is run."
However, O’Connor added: "There are still serious flaws to be corrected, and if campus bars are to survive, they need to stop separating catering and drinks accounts, and integrate closer with student life, by strengthening the collegiate identity of the bars, whilst advertising to new potential customers - in particular, campus' many societies." He suggested that giving bar managers greater freedom should go a long way towards achieving this.
Grenville also gave words of caution, warning "that all campus bars are in 'Use it or lose it' land". She explained that the £500 target will remain in operation next term and beyond. Nonetheless, she expressed hope "that B Henry's will become a great social focus, and that it will become a watering hole (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and supper destination of choice."
It was announced in the Autumn Term that B Henry’s might be at risk at closure, and the Alcuin College JCRC held an Extraordinary JCR Open Meeting at the end of October to explain the situation. Following a strong campaign to save the bar, a decision was made in November to keep the bar open for at least one more term while a more thorough consultation process takes place. The Bars Strategy Group was reconvened as part of this process.
