Post-exam depression

Books
Put down the pen...
Saturday, 23rd January 2010
So you have spent hours and hours of each and every day revising absolutely everything you can about your modules, making sure you have every single detail in check and ready for the ‘big push'. So what do you do once it's all over? Once you’ve spent all those weeks revising and panicking, what do you do next?

The most depressing thing about exams is that not everything comes up, so if you’ve spent pain-staking hours revising everything there is to know about snails (No joke!) then of course, when it doesn’t come up, it feels like all those hours you spent with your head stuffed in books were pointless and ultimately a waste of time.

Then of course, there is all this free-time you suddenly have. After an exam you are at a loss of what you do.

What NOT to do after exams list:

  • Don't Sit and cry...

If you have done badly, this will not help your situation. No amount of tears will change your grades.

  • Don't Drink alone...

Drinking till the floor begins to look very appealing doesn’t help either. Especially not when you are on your own. You should be celebrating, not commiserating!

  • Don't Jump off a cliff

Or jump off anything in fact. As silly as this may sound every year there are stories of people being driven over the edge by exam pressures. Nothing is that bad. Call me the optimist but things will always get better.

  • Don't Go back to work

You need a rest. You need some time for your brain to flush out all the old information and prepare itself for the next set of modules. This is a good reason to have a few days off from work to relax and not panic about the work ahead of you.

Fun things that you SHOULD do after your exams:

  • Do Go out

After an exam it is always VERY important to go out. Use those legs that have been cooped up in the library or behind exam desks and march yourself into town. If you have had a bad exam, a bit of alcohol and some close friends will always make the world seem that much brighter!

  • Do Join a society

Another thing to do after your exams is to keep yourself busy. Joining a society means you can do as little or as much as you like to get involved. I joined The Yorker and after my exams it was great to throw myself in there and get lost in writing articles. It is also a fantastic way to meet new people.

  • Do Go shopping

Buy something fun. Buy a new CD or a new DVD, book or game. This will help with all the relaxation you should be having!

  • Do Some fitness

We all know that lots of revision means lots of snack food and that after the revision period (and Christmas!) this will take its toll. I brought a fitness DVD after Christmas and my exams, and found that it was not only great for exercising but was also a huge amount of fun!

  • Do Be positive

No matter how badly your exams went. For now, put all your worries aside, relax and be refreshed enough to start the next ‘big push’ towards your degree.
