Picnic & straw hat
Picnics and straw hats are hot

HOT

  • Picnics

The past couple of days may not have been great for getting out and about, but with the weather due to improve later in the week, what could beat chilling out in the park with some friends? I'll tell you what: chilling out in the park with some friends, some food, some wine, a blanket and a football or Frisbee.

  • Bike Rescue

Whether your own bike's in need of fixing up a bit or would like to get one without paying Halfords' prices, Bike Rescue might just be for you. Down on Terry Avenue along the river, it's a not-for-profit organisation that take donated bikes and fix them to an immaculate standard before selling them on at tiny prices. They're open 10-6 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 10-8 on Thursdays.

  • Straw hats

The straw hat, once only seen worn by old men and punting aficionados, are so hot this summer it hurts and a great way to protect your head from the sun too. Check out this offering from ASOS for a traditional-style woven trilby, or for a more modern look try this straw fedora from EK by New Era.

NOT

  • Exam season

Quote We sure as hell aren't gonna sit inside and revise while it's nice out and the sun is like kryptonite to our work ethic. Quote

Exams are most definitely not hot. Who ever thought that summer would be the best time to put all the most important exams in our lives? GCSEs, A-Levels and finals. We sure as hell aren't gonna sit inside and revise while it's nice out, the sun is like kryptonite to our work ethic. Let's face it, the academic year is rigged to make us fail - at least that's the excuse I'll be using when I get my results at the end of June. The only good thing about having exams this early if you do, is the empty timetable afterwards while your friends are still struggling on.

Petrol pumps
Not hot: petrol prices

  • Petrol prices

I know not many of us students are drivers, and bitching about petrol prices is pretty much continuous but c'mon! A 13% price hike since this time last year in the season of road trips and holidays? Yes, petrol's still cheaper than bottled water but I don't drink 40 litres of water at once.

  • Test cricket on Sky

Test cricket no longer being on terrestrial TV is a crying shame. Not being able to afford to sit in the pub watching it for days on end, my only choice is to listen to Boycott, Blowers & co on Radio 4 longwave. Although their coverage is excellent and often, quite hilarious, it just doesn't quite cut it. I just wish either Channel 4 or the good old BBC still had the contract and whole days could be wasted with the excuse of watching sport. Hopefully when Sky's contract comes to an end in 2009 it'll once again return to the screens of the great unwashed.
