Crowds flocked to the University earlier this evening to welcome the new Chancellor, Professor Sir Malcolm Grant, to his position at York.
The event was presented by YUSU’s Activities Officer Chris Wall, who read out live tweets sent in by audience members using the #celebrateyork hashtag. The newly refurbished ‘Vanbrugh Paradise’ was opened to the public, now known as Vanbrugh Piazza. The community hub, which is yet to be built on the Piazza, will be named after the popular ex-Chancellor, Greg Dyke.
As well as live entertainment, face painting and the fireworks display, spectators could buy pizza and doughnuts from food vans outside of the Exhibition Centre. The crowds were entertained with performances from Brass Band, York Opera Society, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society and also Central Hall Music Society.
Chris then welcomed Vice Chancellor Koen Lamberts to the stage, which was set up on the steps of central hall. He said,
You have come to the University on a very special day. I am absolutely delighted that Malcolm has joined the University. Let’s celebrate York!
Following the fireworks display, Chris thanked everyone for coming to the event.
Sir Malcolm Grant, ex-president and provost of UCL and the chairman of NHS England, officially took over from Greg Dyke on the 1st August.
