Nominees: Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Matthew Morrison (Glee), Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Steve Carell (The Office), Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
There doesn’t appear to be an obvious frontrunner here, and a few of the nominations were fairly predictable (Carell and Baldwin for instance). Also, with Monk coming to an end, Shalhoub’s was an obvious nomination. Jim Parsons has always been the real star of The Big Bang Theory and this is deserved recognition, but in my opinion Morrison’s performance as a “comedy actor” on Glee just isn’t worthy of this Emmy nomination.
Prediction - Alec Baldwin (he’s won it for the past two years, I think it’s likely the Emmy voters will pick him again)
My Personal Pick - Jim Parsons (The character of Sheldon is the reason that I watch TBBT, and he has been consistently entertaining this year)
Nominees: Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Hugh Laurie (House), Matthew Fox (Lost), Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
This is a much more tricky one to predict. Cranston has won twice already but the Emmy voters have some snubs to make amends for where Chandler is concerned. The Lost fanboy in me is ecstatic for Fox’s nomination but I think it’s very unlikely that he’ll win. I’m always happy to see Dexter recognised and with this year being arguably the best season Hall’s is a very deserved nomination. There could potentially be a dark horse here too, a win for Hugh Laurie is a definite possibility.
Prediction - Bryan Cranston (already with two wins to his name, and with Breaking Bad constantly lauded with critical acclaim - I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win)
My Personal Pick - Michael C. Hall (This season of Dexter was fantastic and the character is one of the most intriguing on TV)
Nominees: Lea Michelle (Glee), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Amy Poehler (Parks And Recreation), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Toni Collette (United States of Tara)
I don’t think you’d have had too much of a problem if you’d attempted to guess these nominations. Collette was last year’s winner, and both Fey and Louis-Dreyfus were seemingly automatic nominees as well. I personally think it’s great to see Poehler make the cut. The same goes for Michelle, who has many of Glee’s funniest moments (and an incredible singing voice too!). However, Falco is the frontrunner and many were surprised she didn’t pick up a Golden Globe earlier in the year - she’s the one to beat.
Prediction - Edie Falco (the Nurse Jackie star is the frontrunner, and I think it’s more than likely that she’ll win)
My Personal Pick - Tina Fey (unlike some others, I’ve loved the fourth season of 30 Rock. Liz Lemon is a hilarious character that Fey pulls off effortlessly every single time)
Nominees: Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), Glenn Close (Damages), Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), January Jones (Mad Men)
This one is really between Marguiles and Close. Marguiles because she’s won an Emmy before and is the star of one of this year’s most popular new shows and Close because she‘s won this award for the past two years. Sedgwick and Hargitay were almost certain for nominations but probably won’t pose much threat to the two favourites. Jones was also someone who’s nomination was expected, especially because she’s been ignored for the previous two years.
Prediction - Julianna Marguiles (the Emmy voters are likely to look favourably on a past winner, and there’s no denying The Good Wife’s popularity)
My Personal Pick - Same again, Julianna Marguiles (I’ve enjoyed the episodes I’ve seen of The Good Wife and I was very impressed by the well-acted lead role, I’d personally like to see her win)
