Week 5 of Term 2 officially marks the halfway point of the academic year, scary no? What’s even scarier is that the lake is still freezing over every few days and more snow is on the way! Ah well, at least the world isn’t coming to an end like in this week’s blockbuster 2012 and also there aren’t soldiers trying to make our heads explode like in The Men Who Stare At Goats. Either way, it pays to count your blessings.
An Education charts the story of Jenny Miller (Carey Mulligan) who falls for a playboy twice her age (Peter Sarsgaard) and is swept away by her new jetsetter lifestyle until a few ugly truths start to emerge. Even though she may be known as Bleak House’s Ada Clare or Doctor Who’s Sally Sparrow, the breakout performance of the year definitely belongs to Carey Mulligan who’s star-turn in An Education has earned her multiple awards and a recent Academy Award nomination, alongside its Best Picture nod.
You voted and YSC listened. Last term saw the introduction of the first major campus survey with The Men Who Stare At Goats topping the bill as the most wanted film for this term. As a movie it’s an actual account of the investigation undergone by journalist Jon Ronson (here renamed Bob Wilton and played by Ewan McGregor) into the weirdnesses of the United States Armed Forces. The truths revealed here are so fantastical that it really does question certain army officials' mental state as you see one of them running headfirst into a wall after attempting to pass through it.
This Friday’s film takes the form of 2009’s biggest disaster movie. From Roland Emmerich (who brought us Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow) we see the crazed vision of thousands of doom-mongers come to life with the world actually ending just as predicted by the Mayan Calendar (while this isn’t even half true, it’s fun to go along with the pretence every once in a while). While it is true that this film cannot boast historical accuracy (yet), it does deliver some of the most spellbinding special effects of the year which consist of the Earth essentially terraforming itself into who knows what.
