Voting is now open for the final regional beauty pageant Miss York 2012, in which University of York student Megan O'Kane is participating.

O'Kane joins 22 other women in the final, which is organised former Miss York Naomi Smith and will be held on May 19 in the York Barbican as part of a fashion show event.

She was picked out of 50 women at the semi-final stage, where competitors faced an interview with judges as well as having their catwalk assessed.

Speaking about the upcoming final to The Yorker, O'Kane revealed that the competitors have been to Portfolio Studios for individual photo shoots, as well as visiting Roko Gym for a fitness boot camp.

She said: "We have also each had to find a sponsor in the form of a local business. I am so excited for the final and getting more excited every day as it get closer."

In the final, each participant will model sportswear, evening wear and 'eco' clothing, as well as competing in a talent round.

Second year Applied Social Science and Criminal Justice student O'Kane has done numerous photo shoots and modelling in the past, but this is her first entry into a pageant.

As well as being assessed by a panel of judges in the final, competitors are also seeking the public vote and members of the public can vote for their favourite competitor from now until the night of the final by visiting the Miss England website.

O'Kane, who is a course rep and a student Trustee said, said: "I feel that people should vote for me to be Miss York because I'm a confident, well-rounded person with a love for our city and the experience needed to represent it. I want to be a positive role model for young women in York.

"I believe that beauty is being comfortable in your own skin and I want other young women to follow my example and be comfortable in theirs.

"I have the passion, drive and determination to go all the way and having been heavily involved within the university since I came here, I have a lot of experience in representing a large and diverse number of people."

The winner will represent Miss York in the Miss England 2012 beauty pageant in London later in May.
