University of York student Megan O’Kane has reached the final of regional beauty pageant Miss York 2012.

O’Kane will join 26 other finalists for the event on May 19 after being picked out of 50 women at the semi-final stage.

The penultimate round, held at the Baltimore Bar in Swinegate on March 11, saw the women interviewed by judges about their jobs and ambitions, hobbies, talents and why they should represent the city.

Second year Applied Social Science and Criminal Justice student O’Kane told The Yorker that she has done numerous photoshoots in the past and has experience as a model, but added that this is her first pageant.

“I'm really enjoying it so far and would love to keep doing them in the future!” she said. “The semi-final was a really good experience.

“We each had to go for an audition in front of a panel of judges. We were grilled for about 10 - 15 minutes about ourselves, why we'd like to be Miss York and asked questions like ‘If you were given 5k, what would you spend it on?’

“We also had to ‘catwalk’ from one end of the room to another so that the judges could assess our ‘walk’ for the final rounds.”

O’Kane, who was elected as a Student Trustee for YUSU earlier this month, added: “I wanted to enter because I believe that I am a good role model for young women and the best person to represent York.

“I believe that beauty is being comfortable in your own skin, and I want other young women to follow my example and be comfortable in theirs.

“I have the passion, drive and determination to go all the way and having been heavily involved within the university since I came here, I have a lot of experience in representing a large and diverse number of people.”

The final of the competition, which has been organised by former Miss York Naomi Smith, will take place on May 19 at the Barbican as part of a fashion show event.

O’Kane revealed: “We haven't been told a great deal about the final yet as it's so far away and we have a number of tasks to complete before then but I do know that there is going to be a ‘talent’ round.”

The winner will represent Miss York in the Miss England 2012 beauty pageant in London later in the month.
