Earlier this afternoon fire services were called to Wentworth College to respond to a major incident. Five fire engines were seen present outside the college.
It has been reported that the ceiling of the Wentworth nucleus toilets was set on fire deliberately. Had the fire alarm not been sounded, the entire building would have been set alight.
A source also overhead a conversation which suggested that the cash till in the café had been robbed but this remains unconfirmed. The building was evacuated for over forty-five minutes before people were allowed to return inside at around 2.15pm.
There is currently no word from the North Yorkshire fire services or YUSU on social media. University of York Health and Fire Safety Officer, Chris Teeling was quoted in YorkVision confirming it was an arson attack and saying the fire services would investigate further.
More details will follow when information becomes available.
