Shoes for S/S13

The best Spring/Summer trends to transcend from the catwalk to the high street this year are footwear with a big emphasis on holograms, minimalism and pastel colours.

Holograms especially were seen all across the designer catwalks – see Burberry and Stella McCartney for just two examples - though here in the real world a hologram jacket isn’t going to do us mere mortals many favours. So it's better to bring just a pop of the trend to your look via footwear and season-specific shoes which can be an easy and inexpensive way of updating a look.

Fashion doesn’t even have to be painful this year as a key trend is the block heel. The stilettos are out and chunky heels, that are easier to walk in, are back. Better still, the low block heel is even more fashionable and makes a perfect summer sandal. But please, try to avoid kitten heels. They died a horrible death a few years ago and are certainly not in need of any resurrection.

The key things to consider when updating your shoe collection are:

  1. Add some colour via the hologram trend. A little goes a long way, like these shiny green ASOS shoes, a steal at £40, or if you’re really brave the tri-colour ASOS ankle straps, £45.

  2. If you’re not feeling so brave, just add a hint of metallic, like these black shoes with a metallic heel from ASOS, £45.

  3. Look for an ankle strap. Ankle strap shoes are timeless when in a classic colour like black or white and they also hit that key minimalist trend, like the sporty white Topshop sandals, £55 or the black strapped, white heeled Topshop sandals, £55. For a more timeless look, choose the plain black ASOS block heeled sandals, £55,

  4. For a fun everyday Summer sandal, go for one of the orange block heeled Topshop sandals either with a buckle, £48 or ankle strap, £55.
