...and welcome to The Yorker’s unique Freshers’ mini site.

First of all, congratulations on getting into The University of York! Following, I am sure, appropriate celebration, now is the time to get fully excited about the year ahead of you.

Excitement is often a Janus-faced feeling. Indeed, while the head giggles at the prospect of parental freedom and wild nightlife, the stomach might already feel sore from the mountains of baked-beans on toast you are about to gulp down. Or is it your stomach gurgling from trepidation at the thought of student life, while your head is trapped into a frenetic spin, worrying about all the things that could go wrong?

At this stage, excitement symptoms are quite normal.

The Yorker’s Freshers’ mini site is here to boost your uni-frenzy as well as reassure your anxieties and it might even give you answers to questions you hadn’t thought of. General information, well-worn tips, creative routes to the offbeat city and into the secrets of the campus, bits and bobs of student lifestyle and passionate comments from former and current students all at your fingertips. Most often funny, and occasionally serious, The Yorker’s Frehsers’ content is full of ravishing surprises and a must read as good summer procrastination.

The Yorker team is already buzzing at the idea of a new term looming and we hope that you will share our thrill! We are very much looking forwards to meeting you all in October.

Enjoy the read!

Who are we?

The Yorker is a fully independent student media company. What it means is that, on the contrary to other student media who depend from the student union, The Yorker receives no money from the union and adopts its own independent editorial line.

Through its website and its newly launched printed magazine, The Yorker presents great content available to both, the student, and larger community in York.

As such, The Yorker alone is responsible for managing its funding and finding its own advertisements. As a business, The Yorker is liable in front of the law like any other company in the UK. The Yorker therefore offers not only a true student media experience but also enables to get your hands on the marketing and finance side of the media industry.

How do I join?

If you are interested in joining The Yorker as a writer or as a contributor to our marketing team, or would simply like to learn more about us you can email editor@theyorker.co.uk or come and find us in the media tent during Freshers’ Fair on October the 5th.

In the meantime, you can also have a look on your favourite social network: on twitter @theyorkeruk and on Facebook.

We are looking forwards to meeting you all!
