One week until Christmas Eve! If you’re not quite in a christmassy mood yet then here are a Christmas songs top ten (in alphabetical order)…

Band Aid 1984 – Do They Know It’s Christmas?

Whilst this year’s Band Aid 30 has come under criticism, the original is a moving and wonderful song and of course, for a great cause. It has to be in any Christmas top ten.

Chris Rea – Driving Home for Christmas

Rea dubbed this his “car version of a carol” and wrote it after being stuck in traffic between London and Middlesbrough. Another belter.

Franz Xaver Gruber & Joseph Mohr – Silent Night

When the Austrian duo wrote and composed the carol “Silent Night,” they could not have predicted how much of a success it would be 150 years later. This is one of, if not the, classic Christmas song.

John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir – Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

A song which had an important message when it came out, to stop the terrible Vietnam War. And at the same time, it is a well written song and another Christmas classic.

Jona Lewie – Stop the Cavalry

Another song protesting against war and another well written Christmas classic.

Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You

Inspired by Carey’s love for her then-husband Tommy Mottola, this beautiful song is definitely one of Christmas’ best.

Slade – Merry Xmas Everybody

Probably the most fun song in this top ten, it’s hard to not have a good time and feel christmassy whenever it comes on.

The Pogues Feat. Kirsty MacColl – Fairytale of New York

Many people have voted this as the best Christmas song of all time and is certainly a top contender. The beautiful and catchy tune and lyrics has ensured this song’s popularity for years to come.

Wham! – Last Christmas

Another popular Christmas song, which became the the biggest selling single in UK chart history not to reach number one (Band Aid’s song came out at the same time), this is a must-listen.

Wizzard – I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday

Last but not least, Wizzard’s song is another very recognizable Christmas classic and a great final addition to the top ten.
