This month, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society will bring Ruddigore to Central Hall. The opera marked the tenth collaboration between W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.
“After the first Baronet of Ruddigore was cursed by an evil witch, his descendants were condemned to commit a crime every day, or suffer an agonising death at the hands of his ancestors. To avoid inheriting the Baronet title, Ruthven Murgatroyd faked his death and began a quiet life as Robin Oakapple in the little village of Rederring, leaving the Baronet title to his brother Despard. But just as things begin to look up for Robin on the cusp of his marriage to Rose Maybud, Despard returns to rid himself of the accursed title, and expose Ruthven for who he really is: the real Baronet of Ruddigore.”
Ruddigore, also known as The Witch’s Curse, is the G&S society’s 43rd main show, and will be performed with a witty new script (updated from the original 1887 libretto) and innovative choreography. The show will be performed at the University of York’s Central Hall from February the 25th through to February the 27th at 7.30pm, and also on February the 28th at the earlier time of 6.30pm.
Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for students. They will be available to buy at Vanbrugh Stalls on campus during the week before the performance from 12-2pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tickets will also be sold throughout the week of the performance at the same time on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. If you don’t manage to pick up tickets from Vanbrugh stalls, tickets can be bought on the door.
