Oh, summer! The flowers have bloomed, the sun has come out of the clouds (not really, but I still have hope), the smell of holiday is surfacing… And what better way to start your summer than with a summer ball. Yay! So, in case you haven’t heard of this yet, the YUSU Summer Ball is taking place every year at the end of the summer term (big surprise there). They have fairground rides, a casino, a silent disco and performances from various artists throughout the night. It sounds like a lot of fun, I know. This year’s Summer Ball will take place at the York Racecourse and it starts in less than 12 hours. If I convinced you to go with my persuasive description *wink wink*, there is still time to get a ticket, choose a fancy outfit and join the fun that YUSU has prepared for us. But, before we turn on the party mood, let’s have a quick look at the lineup for this year.

The lineup is quite extensive and is split into two: the main performances and the second stage which is hosted by University of York’s Band Society. After listening to most of the artists announced I can say that the acts include a wide range of genres so I think there is something for everyone. I selected some artists from the main stage lineup to feature here – the ones that seemed the most exciting to me. In order to see the full lineup, you can go to the official website of the Summer Ball or you can just come along to the Ball and see who else is playing.

Charli XCX

Charlie XCX is probably the most known one from this list so I thought I might as well start with her. I’m pretty sure everyone must’ve heard by now the songs ‘Boom Clap’ and ‘Fancy’ (featuring Iggy Azalea), but if you haven’t you should google them, they’re quite cool. For those who don’t know much about her, Charli XCX’s music style leans very much towards pop/dance, so I definitely think she’s a good choice for this event. Here’s my favourite song of hers which I really hope she will play tonight.

Lady Leshurr

I’m very excited to see Lady Leshurr, although I’ve found out about her only a few weeks ago when she released an EP. What you need to know about her is that she’s an English rapper known for her series of freestyles. I said this before and I’m saying it again, she reminds me very much of Nicki Minaj so if you’re a fan of the latter, Lady Leshurr’s music should appeal to you as well. Here’s one of her songs just to get a taste of what she’ll sing tonight.

Becky Hill

This is the first time I hear about Becky Hill although apparently she’s been around since 2012. I just had a listen to some of her songs and I’m surprised I haven’t found her earlier. I can’t say her music is the most upbeat but it’s definitely poppy EDM so I’d listen to her in the free time. This is the song that came up first when I searched her on YouTube.

SoShe

I couldn’t find a song to show you here (so I only added a picture) but I did listen to SoShe on Spotify and I thought they sound nice. So I’m recommending them. This is a three-piece band based in Newcastle which plays alternative RnB music. They’re quite new to the music industry and that’s why they’re hard to find on music platforms so I’m excited to hear what they prepared for tonight.

…And The Hangnails

The punk lovers will be pleased to know that the British duo from …And The Hangnails will play tonight. Cool fact about them, the band started in York and now they’ve come to release their third album. Although their music isn’t quite what I’d listen to on a daily basis, I think it’ll be pretty cool to see them live tonight. This is what their music sounds like:

LUUNA

This is another band formed in York but unlike …And The Hangnails, these guys make very calm, soft music. Although I like what I listened to from them, their music put me in a sleepy mood so hopefully, they’ll play at the end of the Ball, otherwise, I’ll have to bring my sleeping bag with me. Just kidding, but their music really is relaxing and I would prefer to hear it at the end of a hectic night.

The YUSU Summer Ball 2017 takes place at York Racecourse tonight (13th June) from 20:00.
